How to Unlock Black Tides, Domains & Horizon in Assassin's Creed Shadows
Assassin's Creed Shadows Title Update 1.1.11 adds three activities with separate unlock rules. Black Tides requires completion of Naoe and Yasuke's main story plus the post-launch quests ‘A Critical Encounter’ and ‘A Puzzlement.’ Domains is an end-game system that unlocks at level 30 and contains five simulations across ten challenge levels. Horizon is a new Animus Rift that requires both previous Animus Rifts to be completed first. This guide treats those as three independent progression checks, explains what each activity contains, and shows how to identify the exact prerequisite still blocking a save instead of repeating unrelated content.
What this guide unlocks
Treat the update as three separate unlock tracks. Black Tides is story-gated, Domains is level-gated, and Horizon is Animus-Rift-gated. Checking the wrong progression system is why a player can finish the main story and still not see Domains or Horizon.
Title Update 1.1.11 also positions the activities differently: Black Tides is a free story quest, Domains is an end-game simulation system, and Horizon is a new Animus Rift. Use the section matching the missing activity instead of trying to complete every condition in one combined checklist.
Black Tides requirements
Black Tides requires all three official conditions: finish Naoe and Yasuke's main story, complete “A Critical Encounter,” and complete “A Puzzlement.” Finishing only the campaign is not enough. If the quest is missing, verify the two named post-launch quests individually.
Ubisoft describes Black Tides as a new free story quest involving the Black Cross Templars. Because it is tied to earlier post-launch quest progression, a completed main story save can still be ineligible until those specific quest lines are resolved.
Domains requirements
Domains unlock at level 30. The feature contains five gameplay simulations spread across ten challenge levels, with increasing modifiers designed to test different builds. Reaching the level threshold is the primary gate; Black Tides completion is not listed as a requirement for Domains.
Ubisoft also describes a dedicated progression loop around MOD, including an in-game currency, shop, progression tree, and Domain-exclusive gear and engravings. That makes Domains more than a one-time mission. Before entering higher challenge levels, review the current loadout and upgrades rather than assuming one build will work across every simulation.
Horizon Rift requirement
Horizon requires completion of the two previous Animus Rifts. The gate is therefore historical Rift progression, not character level 30 and not the Black Tides story chain. A player who skipped an earlier Rift must go back and finish it before the new one appears.
When checking a save, identify both earlier Rifts and confirm completion rather than presence in the quest log. The official note is explicit that both previous Animus Rifts must be completed to access Horizon.
Check the requirements
First confirm Title Update 1.1.11 is installed. Then use a three-line checklist: Black Tides—main story plus both named quests; Domains—level 30; Horizon—two prior Animus Rifts completed. This isolates the missing condition quickly.
Do not use one activity as proof that another should be unlocked. A level-30 character can still be missing Black Tides because of quest progression, and a story-complete character can still be missing Horizon because of unfinished Rifts.
